How To Clean Crayon Mark From The Wall

By Jane K - 03 of Aug, 2022

When we bought our home, it was immaculate. The floors were gleaming, the paint was spotless, and the massive run of cedar on the walls of our stairway was beautiful. We made an offer, got the house, and waited 60 days in anticipation of ‘the big move.' On the day of the walk-through, the house looked pretty much the same. Of course, there were boxes here and there, but the house's overall condition was visually flawless.

We moved in the next day to the shock of our lives: the children who lived in the house had decided to give us a house-warming present. They got artistic in just about every room with crayons. Every room!

Over the course of nine months, I have become a crayon-removal expert. Crayons in a Jacuzzi tub? No problem! The kids drew on the window screens with crayons? I've got a solution. Crayon on cedar planks? Now that was a tough one, but I finally got it under control.

The next time little Picasso decides to draw you a masterpiece on your walls, windows, or furniture with crayon, relax. Here are some tips to help you remove crayon marks from everything.

How to Remove Crayon Marks

1. From Walls and Floors

Select the cleaning method that will be the safest and most effective for your surface. If using a liquid cleaner, be sure to test a small, hidden area first to ensure that there will be no damage to the surface. The method below for removing crayon from chalkboards can also be effective for walls and floors.

You need to prepare

  1. A scraper, such as a plastic spatula or spoon
  2. An eraser
  3. Rubber cement
  4. Mayonnaise
  5. Baking soda
  6. Toothpaste
  7. Shaving cream
  8. WD-40
  9. Lighter fluid

Steps to Remove the Crayon:

1. Use a plastic spatula or spoon to gently scrape off the crayon marks. Be careful not to scratch the surface or grind the crayon into the surface.

2. Some types of crayon can be easily removed with an eraser

3. Apply a layer of rubber cement over the crayon mark. Allow the rubber cement to dry and then peel away the rubbery glue and crayon.

4. Mayonnaise works well to remove crayon from polished wood and vinyl. Dab the mayo onto the crayon with a paper towel and allow the mayo to sit for several minutes. Then, simply wipe away the mayo and crayon.

5. Dab a moist cloth with baking soda and use the paste to clean away the crayon.

6. Place some plain white toothpaste on a dry cloth and gently scrub the area.

7. Spray shaving cream onto the crayon mark and use a scrub brush or sponge to clean the area.

8. Spray the crayon marks on wallpaper or porous surfaces, such as concrete, with WD-40 and wipe away the marks.

9. Soak a cloth with lighter fluid and gently rub the crayon marks with the cloth. Be sure to thoroughly wash the cloth afterward, and ventilate the area.
